Veneer

What are veneers?
Veneers/laminates are wafer thin shells of porcelain which are bonded onto the front side of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance by whitening the teeth, closing the spaces to create a great smile.

  • The dental history, complete medical history and x rays are taken
  • A thorough oral examination and medical consultation is done by the dental team consisting
  • Photographs are taken for further comparison after procedure.
  • The teeth and bite will be carefully examined for signs of decay, misalignment, malocclusion and previous dental work.
  • The dentist discusses and advises on options of treatment, type of facilities, risks, anaesthesia, limitations and cost with the patient.
  • The patient may be given an antimicrobial mouth rinse, anti-inflammatory medication and/or antibiotics before the surgery.
  • If the natural teeth are discoloured, the patient may consider whitening the teeth before veneers/laminates are applied, since extremely deep dark stains could potentially show through the thin porcelain shell
    • The patient must inform the dentist if he/she has high blood pressure or knows that they have problems with epinephrine in local anaesthetics.
  • The patient must arrange for transportation and assistance to leave for home after the surgery.

How is the procedure done?
Veneers/laminates require two appointments to complete the procedure, the time span between the appointments being 1-2 weeks

First appointment

  •  The teeth is numbed with a local anaesthetic
  • The teeth is contoured by trimming away 0.5 to 0.7 mm of the outer enamel
  • Impressions are taken of the trimmed teeth to create veneers/laminates
  •  Temporary veneers/laminates may be applied to the teeth

Second appointment

  •  The custom made veneers/laminates are fitted in and tested to make any necessary modifications
  • The teeth are then thoroughly cleaned and the veneer is bonded to the teeth using composite resin cement

What are the post treatment symptoms and procedures?

  • Some sensitivity to hot and cold may be experienced after the placement of the veneers/laminates which usually dissipates after one-two weeks.
  •  Patients may occasionally have difficulty speaking and eating immediately after having veneers/laminates placed until they get used to them.
  • The patient must contact the dentist if the teeth remain sensitive for more than two weeks and  if there is pain that cannot be controlled by medication

  • Veneers/laminates can last from eight to fifteen years with proper care and regular maintenance visits to the dentist
